Clegg and Dodge – Gloucester, Mass.
John Trask reported in his 1885 account of Lane's life that Lane worked for Clegg and Dodge on Sea Street (now Hancock Street); Trask also noted that during that period, W.E.P. Rogers showed Lane's drawing of the Universalist Church to William Pendleton of Pendleton's in Boston. Some scholars have assumed that Clegg and Dodge was a lithography shop, however, Stephanie Buck and Sarah Dunlap in Fitz Henry Lane: Family and Friends, p. 35, were unable to find information about a business by this name, and thought that it was more likely that it was a shoemaker's shop.
