An American Frigate Hove-to Off the New England Coast
Oil on canvas
17 x 21 in. (43.2 x 53.3 cm)
Private collection, New York

Commentary

This painting features a small schooner heading towards large U.S. Navy frigate that may be the "Congress"—the fourth to have that name, it was a 44-gun frigate launched from the Portsmouth Navy Yard in 1841. This scene may be commemorating "Congress's" first visit to the Boston Navy Yard. To the left, a brig and sloop of war are seen heading out of the frame.
