Commentary

The same stone was used to make this certificate for the New England Guards and a sheet music cover, Lawrence Quick Step, 1839 (inv. 465). The version at the Boston Athenaeum was signed but never filled out; the date which begins 184_ suggests that the sheet music cover was made before the certificate.
