Commentary

Peter Anderson, an immigrant from Norway, produced the drawing upon which Fitz Henry Lane based this 1838 lithographic view of the city of Washington. This is the earliest known major view of our nation’s capital. Taken from Arlington, it shows the Potomac River and the far shore from Georgetown to the Capitol and eastward towards Fort McNair. Anderson drew three city views in 1837 —Washington, Worcester, and Ware, Massachusetts. Robert Cooke, a fellow artist at Moore’s Lithography, copied the other two, demonstrating that there were multiple artists in Boston capable of drawing panoramic city views on stone. Since Anderson held the copyright on the print, he undoubtedly was the publisher and distributor as well.
